Impermanence

Time does change the moment
When all it takes is so much
To keep us from forgetting
Where we stand in the midst
Of all the little interests
And reasons for our thoughts

Keep the faith in the now
Still the past that haunts us
Slowly making the view hazy
And so every bit of truth is
Eclipsed by the Ego's fear
That death is lurking near

Someday this too shall pass
And all that will be left of us
Is a shell of memories and
Constant reminders to behave
To keep calm while the dead
Mourn for those still alive

It is but definitely our loss
For all of eternity and more
That we have to live and die
Over and over, just to learn
If not today, if not for this
We may never know reality

And that is how life goes on
Like the sand that falls away
When the waves of our destiny
Crash upon the castles built
Layer by layer, painstakingly
Revealing our impermanence
